@CanesRowing Set for Governor's Cup Saturday

FELLSMERE, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing program will hit the water for the second time this week, racing at the Governor’s Cup on Saturday.

The Hurricanes are scheduled to have five boats competing in the Governor’s Cup in Fellsmere, Fla., Saturday. Miami will field a 1V8+, 2V8+ and 3V8+, as well as a 1V4+ and a 2V4+.

“We are excited about getting additional racing experience,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Our goal is to be racing best at the ACC Championships and this is another opportunity to improve on the water.”

Miami’s first boat scheduled to race is the 1V8+, matching up against Columbia and UCF at 8:30 a.m. Miami’s 2V8+ races at 8:50 a.m. against Columbia and UCF. The 1V4+ will race at 9 a.m. against Columbia and UCF, while the 2V4+ races at 9:30 a.m. Miami’s final boat in the water will be the 3V8+, racing at 10 a.m. against UCF. Barry University and Florida Tech will also field boats at the 2015 Governor’s Cup.

Saturday’s racing will cap an exciting start to the 2015 spring season for the Canes. ON Wednesday’s Miami opened its 2015 spring campaign with a scrimmage against UConn. The Hurricanes and Huskies faced off in a series of 750m pieces on the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach, Fla.

“It was a good morning of close racing with good conditions,” Sanderson said following Wednesday’s action. “During the (approximately) 750m pieces, we were able to work on various parts of our race plan.  We look forward to continued development as we prepare for our upcoming races.”

The Varsity 8 boats raced in four pieces with Miami’s 1V8+ winning all four races. The Canes’ 1V8+twice finished pieces under 2:20, finishing Piece 2 in 2:18.82 and Piece 1 in 2:19.46.

The Varsity 4 boats competed in four 2 ½ minute pieces and Miami and UConn also split these races. The Hurricanes won Piece 2 and 3, while UConn prevailed in Piece 1 and 4.

Following this week’s racing action, the Canes will head to San Diego to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic in the final weekend of March.  Miami will also row in the Knecht Cup and April 11-12 and face off against UCF on April 25 in preparation for the ACC Championships on May 15-16.
