@MiamiTrack Hosts Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program opens its 2015 outdoor season this weekend at the Hurricane Invitational.

A two-day meet, the Hurricane Invitational is the first of two home meets held at Miami’s Cobb Stadium this season. The Hurricane Alumni Invitational is set for April 10-11 and will serve as senior day for the Hurricanes.

“We’re excited about outdoor season and excited to be at home,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “We can really get ready for our outdoor championship season by staying at home and getting good training during the week and then competing at home on the weekends.”

Boston University, Colorado State, FIU and Virginia Tech are among the 16 schools traveling to Coral Gables for this weekend’s Hurricane Invitational. Action begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the javelin, while the running events are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with the men’s 5000m. Saturday’s field events begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s discus, the women’s shot put, women’s pole vault and the men’s long jump. The final day’s running events also begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay.

Miami heads into outdoor season off an impressive showing indoors. The Canes had several student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Lea Johnson earned first team All-America honors in the weight throw, while Shakima Wimbley, Tiffany Okieme, and the women’s 4x400m relay of Wimbley, Kelsey Balkwill, Taneisha Cordell and Anthonia Moore represented Miami at the national meet.

The Hurricanes also shined at the ACC Indoor Championships as Johnson, Wimbley and Christian Cook each earned individual conference titles and the Hurricanes had 13 student-athletes earn All-ACC honors.

“I was very proud of our kids during indoor season,” Deem said, “We are coming off a solid indoor championship meet and have trained very well. They have been working very hard and we are excited that they can showcase their talents in front of their family and friends.”
