@HurricaneTennis Hosts FGCU Friday at 4 p.m.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a week and a half without a match, the University of Miami resumes play Friday against FGCU at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The match against the Eagles is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and for the Hurricanes, ranked ninth in the country, it will be their final contest before ACC play begins Feb. 27.
FGCU is currently 1-6 on the season and takes on FAU at home Wednesday afternoon, before coming to Coral Gables Friday.
The Eagles have been led this season by the sister doubles duo of senior Sarah Means and junior Elizabeth Means, 2-0 at the top spot. Senior Candela Munoz Giron was an Atlantic Sun First Team pick last year, while Breana Stampfli was named the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year in 2014.
Paige Yaroshuk-Tews‘ team also faced FGCU last season and the Hurricanes were ranked ninth then as well. Miami defeated the Eagles 6-1 on Jan. 30, 2014.
This will be the first dual match of the spring season for the Hurricanes that is not a part of a tournament. It also begins a stretch of three consecutive home matches for Miami (3-2), with the next two coming against Wake Forest (Feb. 27) and Clemson (March 1) in ACC play.
Miami has not played since completing action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 8 in Charlottesville, Va.
The Hurricanes feature a quintet of ranked singles players, headlined by top-10 ranked Stephanie Wagner. The junior is eighth in the country. Freshman Sinead Lohan is No. 36, junior Clementina Riobueno comes in at No. 61, senior Lina Lileikite ranks No. 78, and freshman Wendy Zhang holds the No. 98 spot.
Three Miami doubles pairs are ranked as well, with Lileikite and Wagner leading the way at the No. 10 spot on the ITA’s list. Senior Monique Albuquerque joins Riobueno in the No. 17 position, while Lohan and Zhang are No. 57.
