CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 71 University of Miami men’s tennis team finished the day with an unblemished 7-0 victory over Kennesaw State at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The Canes won all six singles matches and two doubles matches.

The dual match began with doubles action, where the Canes were able to win two hard fought matches. Henrique Tsukamoto and Piotr Lomacki came out strong and were able to close out against David Durham and Drew Wendel, winning the match, 8-6. Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar were also able to come up with the victory against Simon Pritchard and Evan Holvoet, 8-6.

The freshman duo of Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm were up 7-6 against Manuel Castellanos and Alejandro Valencia when the match was called.

“The doubles point was very contested, and it gave us a little bit of room,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “It was good to see some of the guys step up their level today.”

After winning the doubles point, senior Gonzalez came out strong and dominated his singles match against Jake Bouchillon, 6-0, 6-0.

“I went into the singles match after a good doubles win with Kevin [Bondar],” said Gonzalez. “I’m very happy about the amount of concentration I put into that match, winning a match 6-0, 6-0, especially in college, is very hard.”

Fellow senior Tsukamoto also won his singles match, against Alejandro Valencia. Tsukamoto dominated the first set and was challenged in the second but was able to pull out the straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-4.

No. 62 Lomacki played well in a competitive match against Simon Pritchard and won, 6-3, 6-4. Fellow freshman Christian Langmo also came out on top in a straight-set victory against Manuel Castellanos, 6-3, 6-3.

Freshman Andrew Harrington gave the Canes another dominant win against Drew Wendel, 6-1, 6-2. Fellow freshman Niclas Genovese, a native of Zug, Switzerland, clinched the sweep for the Canes with a victory over David Durham that extended to a 10-point tiebreak, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7.

“It was a really good day for us leading up to our match against Pepperdine,” added head coach Rincon.

The Canes will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14, against No. 48 Pepperdine at the Neil Schiff Center.
