@CanesMensTennis Hosts KSU & Pepperdine
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 71 University of Miami men’s tennis program will continue their 2015 spring campaign this weekend on Friday, Feb. 13 when they host Kennesaw State at 12 p.m. and No. 48 Pepperdine on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
This weekend’s match-up will be the first meeting between Miami and Kennesaw State. The match-up against Kennesaw State will not only be the first meeting between the Canes and the Owls, but will also be the first time that head coach Mario Rincon faces his brother Eduardo Rincon, the head coach of Kennesaw State. The Owls enter this weekend with a 1-3 record.
The No. 71 Canes will be vying for an upset against No. 48 Pepperdine, who they have met on 17 previous occasions. The Canes have a 2-15 all-time record against the 2006 National Champion. Pepperdine comes to Coral Gables with a 1-3 record.
The Hurricanes will be looking to use the momentum gained after last weekend, where the Canes came way with a 1-1 record in a doubleheader against FGCU and Liberty. After falling to FGCU in the first match, the Canes came away with a 4-2 victory against Liberty.
In singles play, senior Henrique Tsukamoto leads the team with three singles victories with fellow senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshmen No. 62 Piotr Lomacki and Christian Langmo all following closely behind with two victories. Lone sophomore Bernard Tefel and freshmen Andrew Harrington and Niclas Genovese each have one singles victory.
In doubles play, Gonzalez and freshman Kevin Bondar lead the way with an unblemished 3-0 record. Tsukamoto and Lomacki have also found success playing together with four doubles victories. Freshman Nile Clark has two doubles victories, one coming with Harrington and the other with freshman Alexander Fahnehjelm.
After the two home matches, the Canes continue to play at the Schiff in two weeks when Miami hosts Bethune-Cookman in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. and again at 4 p.m.
