BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team earned its third head-to-head win of the season and came just short of another Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Participating in a four-team meet hosted by Virginia Tech, Miami captured a convincing 208-88 win over UNC-Wilmington and came just three points shy of topping ACC foe Georgia Tech (148-151). The host Hokies topped all three visiting teams to emerge victorious.
The Hurricanes (3-4) opened the meet in impressive fashion, with sophomore Cameron Davis continuing midseason form by winning the 1000-yard freestyle by nearly eight seconds (10:25.63). The Sarasota, Fla., native topped Virginia Tech’s Laura Schwartz (10:33.73) to capture first place.
Freshman Julie Suarez continued her strong freshman campaign with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:56.01), while senior Heather Arseth earned points for the Hurricanes with a fifth-place finish of her own in the 100 backstroke (57.24).
Sophomore Angela Algee matched classmate Davis with a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:04.59), while a win from Arseth in one of her signature events, the 50 freestyle (24.08), built more momentum for the Hurricanes.
Freshman Briadam Herrera delivered one of the marquee performances of the day when he set a new pool record and easily took first in the men’s 1-meter with a score of 396.20.
Miami dominated on the boards, as seniors Thea Vock and Cheyenne Cousineau teamed up with Wally Layland to take three of the top four spots in the 1-meter. Vock took second (316.75), Cousineau third (295.35) and Layland fourth (285.10).
Vock followed up her second-place finish with top honors in the 3-meter (342.75), while Layland took second (318.95) and Cousineau fourth (314.35).
Arseth took her second top finish of the day in the 100 freestyle, narrowly edging Adriana Grabski of Virginia Tech (52.17) with a time of 52.14. Freshman Rebeka Repman took sixth in the same event, touching the wall in a time of 53.74.
Davis took second in the 500 freestyle (5:04.73), while junior captain My Fridell took second in the 100 fly (56.87). Algee was not far behind, posting a time of 57.52 for fourth place.
The Hurricanes 400 free relay entry, comprised of Suarez, Repman, Amy Wiley and Arseth, finished in third place with a time of 3:29.74 to conclude the meet.
Miami returns to the pool on Jan. 31 for a Senior Day showdown with FIU. The dual meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
