Canes Doubles Duos Earn Wins at UF Invite
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team finished its first day at the Florida Invitational with two doubles victories at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
In the first session of doubles play, the duo of sophomore Bernard Tefel and freshman Andrew Harrington came out on top in a solid performance against the pair of Josh Wardell and Oliver Landert from host Florida, 8-5. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshman Christian Langmo battled in a tight match defeating Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff from Texas, 8-7(4). Rounding out the action in the first session of doubles for the Canes was senior Henrique Tsukamoto and Nile Clark, who fell in a tough match against Lloyd Glasspool and Nick Naumann from Texas, 8-3.
In the second session of doubles play, Tefel and Harrington fell to Chase Perez-Blanco and Richard Brej from Florida, 8-3. Clark and Tuskamoto faced the duo of Gordon Watson and Diego Hidalgo, the No. 42 ranked duo according to ITA Rankings. Clark and Tsukamoto battled but did not have enough, falling, 8-5.
Freshman Kevin Bondar paired up with William Jou of Texas in doubles to play Wardell and Landert (UF). The Gator duo was victorious, winning the match 8-5. Gonzlez and Langmo then wrapped up the doubles action for the Canes, falling to the No. 39 team of Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman from Florida, 8-2.
The Canes battled in seven singles matches on the day, three of which were against Top 100 players.
Tsukamoto had the tough task of facing No. 68 Elliot Orkin from Florida. Tsukamoto competed hard but was unable to close out falling, 6-4, 7-5. Lone sophomore Tefel also faced a ranked opponent, No. 70 Gordon Watson from Florida, and came up short, 6-4, 6-3 in the match. Senior Gonzalez faced the No. 100 Maxx Lipman from Florida, and could not develop a groove, going down, 6-2, 6-4.
In only his second tournament of the year, freshman Bondar went down in a tough straight-set match against Richard Brej from Florida, 6-3, 6-1. Fellow freshman Langmo fell in a tough three setter to Diego Hidalgo from host Florida, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Freshman Clark faced Oliver Landert from Florida and battled in the first but ultimately did not have enough going down, 6-3, 6-1. Finishing the Canes singles action was Harrington, who faced Chase Perez-Blanco from Florida, but fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The Canes hit the court again on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
