CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Inclement weather delayed the University of Miami rowing program’s debut at the 2014 Head of the Hooch by one day, but the Canes had four boats compete on Sunday in Tennessee.

Miami originally entered the Head of the Hooch with seven entries, but Saturday’s racing was cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions. Head coach Dave Sanderson and the Canes adjusted and had four boats race in Sunday’s Women’s Open 8+ race.

“It was an unusual weekend of racing due to the weather, but in the end, four boats were able to get some valuable racing experience, “ Sanderson said. “The novices got a taste of what racing is like in a big venue and had a good row. The varsity had solid results today and did accomplish some specific goals we set for them before the race.”

Miami’s “A” boat finished eighth with a time of 16:36.1. Coxed by Nicole Rotkovitz, the “A” boat was stroked by Caitlin White-Parsons and followed by Devon Phelan-Patton, Sarah Aschebrock, Caitlin Lowe, Jane Moore, Alison Whitty, Catherine Tayler and Hannah Nielsen.

The “B” boat, coxed by Megan Hamilton, featured Taylor Richard, Elise Wiley, Marguerite Bandeian, Gigi Williamson, Nicola Eick, Hannah Meister, Alex Ware and Joletta Silva. They crossed the finish line in 17:08.4 to place 13th.

Miami’s “C” boat featured novices Carolina Shaw, Alyssa Basdavanos, Emme Rempel, Alexa Aguilar, Kamila Knaudt, Katie Taylor, Mariah Robinson and Camden Vitale. Coxed by Emily Storrs, the “C” boat finished 26th with a time of 19:27.9.

The “D” boat was coxed by Sophia Doughty and consisted of Lindsay Bouchacourt, Zoey Neudeck, Kristen Bufkin, Rebecca Kaplan, Madolyn Guillard, Samantha Chenkin, Olumayowa Olujohungbe and Kelly Zahnen. Miami’s final boat finished 30th with a time of 20:56.5.

The Head of the Hooch features the largest number of entries of any major regatta, drawing over 2,000 boats and 6,000 rowers annually. Sunday marked the final race of Miami’s fall schedule. The Hurricanes will look towards the spring championship season.

“We are looking forward to training hard and preparing for the spring season,” Sanderson said.
