S&D Wraps Up Strong Showing at SMU Classic

LEWISVILLE, Texas – Miami wrapped up its trip to the 21st annual SMU Classic Saturday night, ending the competition with another top finish from senior diver Thea Vock and 218 points as a team.

“This was a great meet for the Hurricanes,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “Vock won again tonight, and based on her two wins, she takes home ‘high point diver of the meet.’”

Sophomore Cameron Davis, who served as one of Miami’s top point-getters Friday, opened the action with a time of 4:53.15 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Julia Schippert kept up Miami’s momentum with a 2:18.90 in the 200 breaststroke, while senior Amy Wiley finished in 2:20.97 in the same event.

“The swimmers were great this weekend,” Kershaw said. “They came back tonight and swam even faster than last night. As I told them, this is a direct result of their training.”

Freshman Julie Suarez (2:01.91) and senior Heather Arseth (2:00.42) both earned Miami points in the 200 backstroke, before Vock delivered her top finish in the 3-meter diving event.

After capturing first place Friday night in the 1-meter, Vock took first with a score of 336.65 in the 3-meter. She bested Alex Bettridge of LSU (334.50) and Haley Ishimatsu of USC (330.50) with her performance.

Arseth finished fourth in her final of the 100 freestyle (49.94), ending as one of just four swimmers across both heats to finish the event in less than 50 seconds. Sophomore Angela Algee finished the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:01.50.

“They are training at a much higher level, and that is showing in their competitions,” Kershaw said. “Now we have to up the training and get even faster.”

Miami ended the night with the 200 free relay, as the Hurricanes’ entry of Rebeka Repman, Arseth, Algee and My Fridell touched the wall in a time of 1:33.21.

“It was so great to be a part of this meet,” Kershaw said. “Great competition and a great venue. I look forward to coming back again next year.”

Miami returns to the pool Oct. 25 with its first dual meet of the season. The Hurricanes make the short trip west to battle FGCU in Fort Myers, with action slated to begin at 11 a.m.
