Soccer Tripped Up by Fighting Irish
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s soccer team dropped its match with No. 11 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Trailing just 1-0 at halftime, Miami conceded four second-half goals in the defeat.
Despite allowing a goal in the opening stages of the match, Miami strung together some impressive sequences in the first stanza. A 10th minute sequence from Jasmine Paterson to Natalie Moik resulted in a dangerous cross, but Fighting Irish keeper Kaela Little was up to the challenge.
Miami might have been trailing 2-0 in the 13th minute, but a clutch save from senior Emily Lillard in the 13th minute kept the deficit at one goal. Miami did a nice job of controlling Notre Dame’s offense for the remainder of the first half, and another stop from Lillard – this one on a diving save in the 34th minute – gave Miami some momentum.
Lillard came up with two stops in the final 10 minutes of the first half, including a close-range effort in the 42nd minute, to keep the deficit at just 1-0 by the halftime whistle.
A penalty kick in the 60th minute on a challenge from Shannon McCarthy resulted in a second goal for Notre Dame, who took a 2-0 advantage.
The Fighting Irish added a goal two minutes later and two more in the game’s final stages – both after the 80th minute – to earn the 5-0 decision.
Miami continues its four-game road swing next Saturday, Oct. 18 with a trip to Clemson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
