@CanesRowing Hopes to Build Off Scrimmage

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing program opened its fall season with a scrimmage against UCF and Barry University.

The Hurricanes hosted the Knights and Buccaneers on the Indian Creek. The three teams conducted set pieces in both the varsity and novice divisions, though no official results were recorded.

“It was great to get good side-by-side, competitive racing with UCF and Barry today,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “You can compete daily in practice all you want, and we do, but it’s just different when an outside team lines up next to you.”

Saturday’s scrimmage was the first on-water experience for the Canes against another opponent this fall. Miami benefitted from the competitive environment and will look to build off Saturday’s experience as it prepares from next week’s Head of the Indian Creek.

The Hurricanes will have two entries in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. Miami has one entry in the Championship four event and one in the Club four event scheduled for October 18-19.

Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes earned four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 1-2.
