Dourado & Hesslau Lead Canes at Paul Short
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Miami cross country team heads to Pennsylvania to compete in the Paul Short Run.
The Hurricanes had 12 student-athletes competing in the Gold races this weekend. Six men ran the Gold 8K, while six women competed in the Gold 6K The Paul Short Run is held at the Lehigh Cross Country Course.
Douglas Dourado was Miami’s top finisher on the men’s side with a time of 25:58. The senior was followed by sophomore Jon Keller (26:24) and junior Kevin Marsh (26;32). Freshman Sean Grossman and senior AJ Ricketts completed Miami’s men’s representative in the Gold 8K.
“Doug continues to be a constant for the men,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “Overall, the men raced too conservative as a whole. They need to be more assertive in the early miles.”
Gabrielle Hesslau led the Hurricane women in the Gold 6K, finishing with a time of 22:49 that ranks 10th in school history on the all-time 6K list. Fellow sophomore Frida Carlsson (24:27) and senior Julia Koch (24:50) rounded out Miami’s top three finishers on the women’s side, while freshmen Mulloy Manning and Janine Depree and senior Kelly Williamson also competed for the Canes.
“It’s good to have Gabby back racing,” Griffiths said. “She ran gutsy from the first two miles.”
Miami will spend the next few weeks in preparation for the Westminster Academy Invitational on Oct. 25, the Canes’ final race before the ACC Championships on Oct. 31.
“We will get back to work and look forward to better results at Westminster Academy in two weeks,” Griffiths said.
