Swimming Wraps Up Day One at All-Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s swimming team opened their season in impressive fashion Friday at the Pinch A Penny All-Florida Invitational, ending the afternoon in fifth place at the O’Connell Center on the University of Florida campus.

“I’m very proud of this team, from top to bottom, and where we’re headed,” head coach Andy Kershaw said. “Not only are we swimming well, but more importantly, we are doing the little things right.”

During morning preliminary rounds, the Hurricanes impressed with a balanced effort from their strong lineup. Particularly impressive were sophomore Angela Algee and freshman Julie Suarez, who delivered impactful performances in their first competitive action of the season

“Angela and Julie did a great job this morning swimming every event of the session and doing them all well,” Kershaw said earlier.

Miami had three qualifiers in the “A” finals Friday night: Heather Arseth in the 50-yard freestyle, Cameron Davis in the 500 freestyle and Algee in the 200 IM. In addition, the Hurricanes had Suarez in the “B” final of the 500 free, junior Madison Qualy and Suarez in the “B” final of the 200 IM, as well as Algee and freshman Rebekah Repman in the “B” final of the 50 freestyle.

“Our women showed a lot of toughness today,” Kershaw said. “They raced hard and fought for everything.”

A dominant performance out of Arseth sent Miami to a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay. Suarez then delivered a fifth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:06.15) to keep Miami in contention.

A fifth-place finish from Cameron Davis in the “A” final of the 500 freestyle (5:00.26) kept the Hurricnaes rolling.

“We can always count on Arseth for a good split,” Kershaw said. “Suarez came right out of the relay and did a nice double into the 500 freestyle. Davis was great in the 500 and earned a great time to start the session.”

Algee had a number of strong showings, including an eighth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.87) and a seventh-place showing in the “B” final of the 50 freestyle (24.50). Arseth (24.02) took eighth in the “A” final of the same event.

“We finished with some good splits on the medley,” Kershaw said. “This was a good start to the season, and it will be important to see how they respond racing back-to-back days.”
