Miami to Hold Inaugural #Edna5K4Canes

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Athletics Department will play host to the inaugural Edna C. Shalala 5-kilometer Run/Walk (#Edna5K4Canes) on Saturday Dec. 13, beginning at 10 a.m. on the Coral Gables campus.

Participants in the run/walk will have the opportunity to complete the course alongside members from Miami’s women’s sport teams, coaches, spirit squads, athletic administrators and marching band.

“This will truly be a unique opportunity for our local community to join Miami Hurricane student athletes, coaches, support staff and administrators for an exciting day that showcases women’s athletics,” said Miami women’s basketball head coach Katie Meier. “We as an athletics staff could not be more thrilled to give our fans and community an opportunity to experience our beautiful campus here at UM.”

All race participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal, entry into a post-race tailgate and one complimentary season ticket to all remaining 2014-15 women’s basketball home games.

In addition, those who register for the event will receive a complimentary admission (with race bib) into the Hurricanes women’s basketball game against Coppin State at the Bank United Center at 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit women’s athletics at Miami and the Edna C. Shalala Foundation to honor President Donna Shalala’s mother and continue the Hurricanes’ tradition of excellence in women’s sports.

Edna Shalala is a devoted athlete and is one of the biggest supporters of women’s athletics in Miami history.

“Edna Shalala has been a tremendous proponent for women’s athletics both nationally and within the University of Miami athletics community,” said Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Women’s Administrator Jenn Strawley. “The continued growth of women’s athletics at Miami requires the support of our fans and community. This event and the Edna Shalala Fund for Women’s Athletics make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.”

Those who wish to support this cause but are unable to run, can still support the initiative by donating to the Edna Shalala fund that supports women’s athletes.  Donations will benefit women’s athletics and funds raised will go towards Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami.

The 5K run/walk course will take place with a scenic run through the Coral Gables campus, pass through the athletic department facilities and showcase much of campus.

Miami sponsors 10 women’s varsity sports, featuring over 200 female student-athletes. Among the 10 women’s sports, the Hurricanes have combined for seven national championships and numerous conference titles.
