Piotr Lomacki Falls to Top Seed at ITA
TULSA, Okla. – University of Miami freshman Piotr Lomacki lost in a tough three-set match in the first round of the main draw after a rain delay at the Saint Francis ITA Men’s All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa.
“Piotr played at a high level throughout the match,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “He had opportunities to close out the match in two sets, but Lenz raised his game in key points of the match.”
After winning three-straight singles matches to qualify for the first round of the main draw, Lomacki, a native from Warsaw, Poland, had the tough task of facing the No.1 seed Julian Lenz from Baylor. Lomacki started the match off well, winning the first set, but could not close out in the second, and was not able to regain his stride in the third, losing the match, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6. This was Lomacki’s third straight three-set match. Lenz was ranked No. 738 in ATP while Lomacki is No. 788.
“Piotr looked very confident the entire match and adjusted well to playing indoors,” added head coach Rincon.
Lomacki will continue play Friday in the consolation bracket when he faces the four-seed, Dane Webb of Oklahoma, at noon.
Lomacki was the first Hurricane since 2008 to play in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships. In 2008, former All-American Daniel Vallverdu was the No. 3 seed overall.
The Hurricanes will be back in action later this month at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., from Oct. 16-19.
