Templeton Named ACC Freshman of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a stellar showing against Notre Dame and Duke, Haley Templeton was named the ACC Freshman of the Week for Sept. 29, 2014.
The freshman setter played a key role in helping Miami remain unbeaten at home in 2014. Templeton, who entered the weekend as the ACC leader in assists per set with 10.66, dished out 27 assists and helped Miami hit .271 in their Friday night victory over Notre Dame. The Alpharetta, Ga., native also recorded three of Miami’s 10 service aces against the Fighting Irish.
Two days later, Templeton distributed 21 assists and tallied two more aces in a match against Duke. She also was a perfect 4-for-4 in attacks, hitting 1.000 in two sets against the Blue Devils.
“Based on the number of great freshman volleyball players, it is a true honor to be chosen the ACC Freshman of the Week, Templeton said. “This would not have been possible without the support and outstanding play of my passers and hitters. I am honored to be able to play with them.”
Templeton has been impressive as a freshman, tallying 421 assists (10.52/set) over 13 matches this season. The 6-foot setter has also been a threat to attack, notching 26 kills on the season, and her 15 service aces lead the Hurricanes.
“I am excited for Haley,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. She has been playing well for us. Haley is a good volleyball player. She has good skills and a good sense for the game. As seh learns our system, she will continue to get better and run our offense more efficiently. She is really doing a great job for us.”
Templeton has accomplished several noteworthy feats this season. The freshman has recorded at least 20 assists in 12 of Miami’s 13 matches this season, including a career-high 53 assists twice (9/13 vs. Ball State and 9/20 vs. Missouri). Templeton, who is Miami’s first ACC weekly award winner of the 2014 season, also has at least one service ace in seven of 13 matches this season and has recorded her career-best three on three separate occasions (9/6 vs. Prairie View A&M, 9/19 vs. UNCG and 9/26 vs. Notre Dame).
The Canes are back in action this weekend, hosting Clemson and Florida State. Friday’s match against Clemson is set to begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s match versus the rival Seminoles begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free to both matches.
