Paterson Tallies in 3-1 Defeat to Washington
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Miami Hurricanes dropped their Nike Portland Invitational finale to Washington Sunday afternoon, falling to the Huskies by a final score of 3-1.
“I was disappointed how we came out to play today,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “We are going into conference play and we need to continue to work hard, pay attention to details and fight.”
Miami registered 11 shots on goal and three corner kicks, but only junior Jasmine Paterson converted with success. The talented playmaker scored in the 36th minute to cut a 2-0 Washington lead in half.
Senior Erin McGovern was credited with an assist on the goal, which came from just inside the 18-yard box. The match was played in front of 2,044 fans at Merlo Field.
“Jasmine came up big today and showed us what kind of talent she has on her goal,” Monroe said.
The Hurricanes received 90-minute performances from the entire starting backline – Gianna Dal Pozzo, Shannon McCarthy, Maddie Simms and Gracie Lachowecki – as well as McGovern.
Two goals from Huskies striker Jacyln Softli put Washington ahead 2-0 by the 17th minute, but Paterson’s goal, which came roughly 10 minutes shy of halftime, saw the Hurricanes (2-6-0) head into the locker room facing a 2-1 deficit.
Senior Emily Lillard made three saves on the day, but a 57th-minute tally by Washington’s Kate Bennett once again put the Huskies ahead by two goals.
Miami would not be discouraged, however, and outshot the Huskies for the remainder of the match.
A 59th– minute shot from senior Ashley Flinn went wide of the net, and Paterson forced Huskies keeper Megan Kufield into a save in the 63rd minute. A shot from Cortney O’Connell went high in the 70th minute, while Lillard made two saves late in the match to keep the scoreline at 3-1.
The match ends Miami’s western road swing, and served as the nonconference finale. Miami will open up ACC play on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., with a matchup against No. 2 Virginia.
“As we move into conference play, we need to be plugged in for 90 minutes,” Monroe said.
