Quevedo, Spain Earn Bronze Medal at #FIBAU18
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball signee Laura Quevedo and the U18 Spanish National Team came away with a bronze medal in the FIBA U18 European Women’s Championship
Spain’s 74-69 win over Serbia in the third-place game ended a strong summer on the international circuit for Quevedo, set to join the Hurricanes for the 2014-15 season.
In the win against Serbia, Quevedo led Spain with 18 points and seven rebounds, while finishing 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Over the span of nine games in the tournament, Quevedo averaged 10.8 ppg and 6.2 rebounds per game.
“It’s been fun watching Laura out here in Portugal,” assistant women’s basketball coach Darrick Gibbs said. “She is such a reliable young lady that has shown that she can make big plays on both ends of the floor. She will be a great addition to our family.”
Spain went 8-1 in the tournament, winning their first seven in a row before being tripped up by Russia in the semifinals. Quevedo’s best game came in Spain’s 76-71 win against Poland, where she scored 24 points and snagged seven rebounds.
Quevedo also competed for Spain at the U20 FIBA World Championships earlier in the summer, where she helped lead her team all the way to the final before falling to France in the championship game.
