@MiamiTrack Has Six Named All-ACC Academic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six members of the University of Miami track and field program were named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic team for outdoor track and field.
Dakota Dailey-Harris, Jamika Glades and Lea Johnson were among the 57 honorees for women’s track and field, while Bassim El-Sabawi, Gian Piero Ragonesi and Anthony Wolliston represented the Hurricanes in a group of 52 men’s track and field honorees.
“All six have accomplished a lot on the track and in the classroom,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “Having Dakota, Jamika and Lea represent our women’s program and Bassim, Gian and Anthony represent our men shows that we are getting it done athletically and academically. I’m very proud of them and that they are a part of our program.”
Dailey-Harris was one of 10 women to represent the Hurricanes at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The sophomore competed in the high jump, where she cleared 1.72m to finish tied for 19th. A native of Providence, R.I., she ranks second in school history in the high jump with a mark of 1.80m. Dailey-Harris is majoring in sport administration.
El-Sabawi, who was also named All-ACC Academic for the 2014 indoor track season, sweeps All-ACC Academic honors for the second consecutive year. The senior from San Diego, Calif., was a standout on the track and in the classroom, representing Miami at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary and graduating Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
Glades also was among the 10 women who competed at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., running in Miami’s 4x400m relay. The sophomore was the ACC outdoor champion in the 400m hurdles and was a member of the Hurricanes’ 4x400m relay team that claimed a gold medal at the ACC Indoor Championships. A two-time All-ACC Academic honoree, the Fort. Lauderdale, Fla., native is majoring in accounting.
Johnson was a standout thrower for the Hurricanes in 2014, claiming the ACC championship in the weight throw and hammer throw. The junior represented Miami at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 16th in the women’s hammer throw. A native of St. Louis, Mo., the microbiology and immunology major is a four-time All-ACC Academic honoree, earning the distinction for both indoor and outdoor track and field in each of the past two years.
Ragonesi earned his first All-ACC Academic honor, wrapping up a successful freshman campaign. A native of Madrid, Spain, Ragonesi competed in the discus at the NCAA East Preliminary and earned a bronze medal in the shot put at the ACC Indoor Championships. Ragonesi ranks in the top 3 in Miami history in outdoor shot put, discus and hammer throw. The freshman is majoring in management.
Wolliston was a member of Miami’x 4x100m relay at the NCAA East Preliminary. The junior posted the fourth-best outdoor 400m time in school history when he ran a 47.89 at the Hurricane Invitational on March 22. He also ranks fourth in Miami history in the indoor 400m with a time of 48.29 seconds. A two-time All-ACC Academic honoree, Wolliston is majoring in biomedical engineering.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
