Monroe, 4x400 Relay Compete at NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore. – Five members of the University of Miami track and field program competed on the second day of the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Amber Monroe was the first Hurricane in action Thursday, competing in the women’s discus. The junior’s best throw of the day came on her third toss, posting a mark of 48.93m that was ninth in Flight 1 and 17th overall.

Shakima Wimbley, Taneisha Cordell, Jamika Glades and Anthonia Moore combined to run the 4x400m relay in 3:38.02. The quartet placed eighth in Heat 1 and 21st overall in the semifinal round.

“Obviously I am disappointed with how we have performed up to this point, but I think we are gaining valuable experience for the future,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “As a coach, I am very competitive and want our team to do well. This experience will help us as we continue to develop so we can perform at a high level.”

Miami, who brought 10 Canes to Eugene this year, has two student-athletes who will compete over the final two days of the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Pole vaulter Alysha Newman entered the NCAA East Preliminary with a personal-best of 4.41m that ranked second in the East Region and fourth nationally. The University of Miami record holder will look to raise the bar to a new level when she competes on Friday at 6:15 p.m. ET.

Dakota Dailey-Harris is scheduled to compete in the women’s high jump on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET. The sophomore’s personal-best mark of 1.80m in the women’s high jump was tied for 16th in the East Region heading into the postseason and ranks second in school history.
