W. Tennis Ranked No. 12 in Final Spring Poll
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team finished the season ranked No. 12 in the country, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Tuesday.
The Hurricanes remained in the same spot that they held prior to the NCAA Team Championships on May 1. Miami finished the spring with a 21-6 record, en route to its ninth straight NCAA Sweet 16.
Miami rolled past Boston University and Oklahoma in the NCAA First and Second rounds before being tripped up by eventual national champion UCLA in the Round of 16.
After the NCAA team loss, three Canes remained in Athens, where 29th-ranked Stephanie Wagner competed in singles and 8th-ranked Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno played doubles. Wagner opened up the round of 64 with a victory against 16th-ranked Breanna Morgan of Florida, and the Miami doubles duo marched all the way to the Elite 8.
During their run at the NCAA Championships, Albuquerque and Riobueno picked up three wins against Top-25 opponents and two against Top-10 teams — No. 1 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford.
With Miami’s seed and deep run in the tournament, both Albuquerque and Riobueno earned All-America doubles honors as a tandem, a huge accomplishment added to the storied women’s tennis program.
