Seven Canes Recognized With All-ACC Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seven members of the 2014 ACC Regular Season Champion Miami Hurricanes were among those recognized with All-ACC honors, the conference announced Monday.

Chris Diaz – who was named the 2014 ACC Co-Pitcher of the Year – earned Miami’s only nod on the All-ACC first team. On the All-ACC second team were outfielder Dale Carey, reliever Bryan Garcia and starting pitcher Bryan Radziewski.

Closing out the All-ACC honorees were outfielder Willie Abreu, catcher Zack Collins – who was selected as the ACC’s Freshman of the Year – and starting pitcher Andrew Suarez ,who each earned a spot on the third team.

The Hurricanes (40-15, 24-6 ACC) did not lose a game started by Diaz this spring. In 14 starts, the Florida City, Fla., native went 9-0 with a 2.32 ERA. He ranked first in the ACC in wins, 12th in ERA, seventh in strikeouts (78) and seventh in innings pitched (89.1).

Carey earned his career-first recognition with a sparkling season in the outfield. The Marietta, Ga., native hit .295 with six home runs – the 10th most of any player in the ACC – and 27 RBI. He also swiped 14 bases, ranked first on the team with 98 total bases and played Gold Glove-caliber defense in the outfield.

Garcia earned the closer’s job from the season’s outset and delivered for head coach Jim Morris and staff all spring. Garcia ranked second in the ACC with 15 saves, including 10 that required more than one inning. He finished the season 5-3 with a 1.61 ERA – the

second-lowest mark among bullpen regulars.

Radziewksi, Miami’s lone 2013 All-ACC selection, finished the regular season 7-2 with a 3.14 ERA. He struck out a team-high 96 batters this spring, moving into sole possession of eighth place in the all-time category (318).

Abreu played in 54 of Miami’s 55 games and ranked second on the team with a .299 average. The Hialeah, Fla., native, who was drafted in the 14th round by the Cincinnati Reds out of high school, had one home run and 27 RBI.

Collins had a dominant freshman season for the Hurricanes, ranking fourth on the team in average (.285) with team-high totals of eight home runs and 46 RBI. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native added 12 doubles and three triples, and ranked among the ACC leaders in a number of offensive categories.

Suarez earned his career-first recognition with an impressive redshirt sophomore campaign. The southpaw registered a 3.15 ERA, tossing a team-high 94.1 innings with 72 strikeouts. He walked just 15 batters on the season – the lowest total among Miami’s rotation – and went 5-3 on the season.

After capturing the second ACC Regular Season Championship in program history, Miami (40-15, 24-6) opens its run as the No. 1 seed at the 2014 ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C., on Wed., May 21. The Hurricanes will take on the winner of the Pool A play-in game – No. 8 seed Wake Forest and No. 9 seed Georgia Tech – at NewBridge Bank Park, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
