@MiamiTrack Ready for Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program opens its 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the Hurricane Invitational.

A two-day meet, the Hurricane Invitational is the first of three home meets held at Miami’s Cobb Stadium this season. The Miami Invitational is scheduled for March 29, while the Hurricane Alumni Invitational is set for April 12.

“We’re excited about outdoor season and excited to be at home for three of the next four weeks,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “We can really get ready for our outdoor championship season by staying at home and getting good training during the week and then competing at home on the weekends.”

Action begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the javelin, while the running events are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with the men’s 5000m. Saturday’s field events begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s discus, the men’s shot put and the men’s long jump. The final day’s running events also begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s 4x100m relay.

Miami heads into outdoor season off an impressive showing indoors. The Canes had five student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships: Artie Burns, Lea Johnson, Amber Monroe, Alysha Newman and Shakima Wimbley.

The Hurricanes also shined at the ACC Indoor Championships as Burns, Johnson, Monroe and Wimbley each earned individual conference titles. Also bringing home gold at the ACC meet was thrower Isaiah Simmons and the women’s 4x400m relay.

“I was very proud of our kids during indoor season,” Deem said, “We are coming off a solid indoor championship meet and have trained very well. They have been working very hard and we are excited that they can showcase their talents in front of their family and friends.”
