@CanesRowing Ready to Host UConn
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami women’s rowing team will host UConn on Friday morning in the Canes’ lone home race of the 2014 season.
The Hurricanes and Huskies will face off in a series of heat-to-head races over a two-kilometer course on the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach, Fla. Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:40 a.m. with the 1V8+ and will continue with the 2V8+ (7:55 a.m.) and the V4+ (8:10 a.m.).
“We are excited to get started,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The team has been working hard on land and on the water. I think we’ve made some progress over the last few weeks, so we are excited to get going.”
Friday’s matchup against UConn officially kicks off the 2014 championship season for Miami, but it will not be the first time the Canes race against another team this year. Miami scrimmaged March 8 against Michigan, helping prepare the Hurricanes for their first season under the direction of Sanderson.
“I think the Michigan scrimmage provided a great racing opportunity for us,” Sanderson said. “There is no way to mimic racing side-by-side with another team unless you actually do it.”
The races against UConn give the Canes a chance to row infront of their home fans. Friday will also mark the final home competition for seniors Maggie Fragel, Katie Guest, Breanna Hayton and Courtney Keller.
“It’s fantastic to be on our home course,” Sanderson said. “We are looking forward to having friends, family and supporters there. It is always great to have a race close by where they can come and see us.”
