S&D Caps Dual Meet Schedule at Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team closed out its dual meet schedule with a hard-fought loss to ACC rival Florida State, dropping the road match 174-113.
“I’m really proud of the Canes today,” head coach Andy Kershaw said. “We put ourselves in a great position heading into the ACC’s.”
The Hurricanes were paced by a strong showing from the diving contingent, who turned in top performances. Miami captured the top two performances in the 1-meter with dominant outings from Cheyenne Cousineau (301.13, first) and Kara McCormack (297.88, second), while the duo finished third and second, respectively, in the 3-meter event.
Junior transfer Heather Arseth, competing in her second event of the spring after missing much of the fall due to injury, delivered a standout performance in the 100-yard Backstroke early in the meet. Arseth bested the competition by nearly a full second, capturing first place in the event in a blazing time of 56.54.
Fellow junior Amy Wiley continued Miami’s momentum, taking first in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.75. Freshman Julia Schippert, who has impressed in her first collegiate season, touched the wall in a third-place time of 1:06.60.
Freshman Angela Algee earned her team points with a second-place finish in the 200 Butterfly (2:03.61), while captain Kat Nicholson delivered a third-place finish in the 50 Freestyle (24.65).
The Hurricanes finished the event on a strong note/ Sophomore My Fridell won her signature event, the 100 Butterfly, in a time of 55.85. Miami’s 200 Freestyle Relay “A” entry of Arseth, Algee, Fridell and Nicholson finished the day’s final event in a time of 1:36.98.
“I was happy to see the swimmers execute techniques and strategies that we have been working on all season, and it paid off in our times,” Kershaw said. “It was great to get wins in the 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly and 1-meter diving events.”
The Miami Hurricanes will next head to Greensboro, N.C. for the 2014 ACC Championships on Feb. 19-22.
