MTen Opens Season At Home Against FAU
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will open the season January 12 against Florida Atlantic at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Sunday matchup will also be the opener for FAU. Attendance is free to the match.
The Hurricanes, currently ranked No. 55 in the preseason college ITA polls, return seven players from last year’s squad, including the team’s singles wins leader, Wilfredo Gonzalez.
The team, spearheaded by three seniors – Omar Aly, Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto – returns 77 singles wins and 24 doubles wins.
Henrique Tsukamoto returns for his third season with the Canes while Floridian William Albanese (Parkland) is back for his sophomore campaign. Miami is rounded out by freshman Bernard Tefel, ranked No. 16 in the state of Florida in his class by Tennis Recruiting.
Mario Rincon’s group will face a bevy of talented teams throughout the 2014 campaign. The Canes will play 13 teams that finished the 2013 season in the top 75 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Of those 13 teams, four finished last season in the Top 25, including No. 1 Virginia, No. 7 Duke, No. 19 Wake Forest, and No. 21 Clemson.
The ACC proved strong in 2013, and all five ACC teams Miami hosts in Coral Gables this season finished 2013 ranked in the top 75, including No. 19 Wake Forest (March 21), No. 35 North Carolina State (March 23), No. 7 Duke (April 4), No. 52 North Carolina (April 6), and No. 37 Florida State (April 19).
Miami’s next match is on Sunday, January 19 when they travel to Orlando to take on in-state rival UCF.
