Diving Wraps Up Day One at UT Invite

AUSTIN, Texas – The Miami Hurricanes diving team wrapped up its first day of competition at the 2013 University of Texas Invitational at the Texas Swimming Center Thursday.

The Hurricanes, competing against some of the nation’s elite programs on the University of Texas campus, saw redshirt senior Zac Nees capture second place in the men’s 1-meter finals.  The Hatfield, Pa., native finished with a final-round score of 397.20, pacing all Miami divers on the day.

Competing alongside the Hurricanes were divers from Arizona State, Cal, Hawaii, Texas Christian, Wisconsin as well as host Texas.

Despite being seeded second heading into Thursday night’s final round after a dominant showing in preliminaries, redshirt junior Sam Dorman finished in sixth place with a final score of 326.80. Sophomore Tanner Wilfong did not qualify for the final round after finishing with 296.85 in preliminaries.

Junior Kara McCormack and senior Thea Vock both qualified for the final rounds after strong showings in preliminaries of 3-meter competition. The duo captured seventh (293.80) and eighth (288.30), respectively, to finish the first day of action.

The Miami divers will resume competition at the UT Diving Invite on Friday with the 1-meter diving preliminary rounds for women at 11 a.m. CT and the 3-meter for men at 1:30 p.m. CT. Finals for the women are set for 5 p.m. CT, while men’s finals are set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
