@CanesMensTennis At Bedford: Day Two

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two Hurricanes battled through new conditions and nagging injuries Friday afternoon at the Bedford Cup – State of Florida Championships at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

Freshman Bernard Tefel, who is beginning the transition to college tennis, lost his Friday match to UNF’s Mark Hamill, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, on an indoor court. After a strong showing in the first set, Tefel showed his youth against an experienced indoor player.

“Bernard played his first time ever indoors against a very experienced indoor player and lost a very close match,” said assistant coach Mark Dickson. “He had his chances late in the second set to win but the momentum went the other way.”

Sophomore Jack Murphy left the tennis court under different circumstances. After falling behind 5-0 to UCF’s Reece Acree, Murphy retired from the match. According to Mark Dickson, Murphy had tried to fight through an injury.

“Jack’s arm became very sore early in the match and we felt it was best for him to stop and get some physical therapy to be able to bounce back quickly for Saturday,” Dickson said.

Three Canes – Tefel, Murphy and Henrique Tsukamoto – will compete again Saturday, participating in the singles consolation bracket. Murphy, who expects to be ready for Saturday, will play Jose Sangroniz of UCF at 9 a.m. Tefel will follow Murphy at 10 a.m. against Stetson’s Chester Espie. Tsukamoto will round out the Canes’ morning play, facing Jack Findel-Hawkins of UNF at 10:30 a.m.
