NCAA Tournament Tuesdays: 2000 Men's Tennis

2000 Men’s Tennis
Prior to the NCAA Tournament, the 2000 Hurricane’s tennis team recorded an impressive 19-win season with a ranking of No. 21, making them one of the top competitors in the nation. Key wins versus Notre Dame in the BIG EAST Championship, as well as West Virginia, secured them a position to compete in the NCAA Tournament.

In the first round of the tournament, the Hurricanes faced a tough competitor in the No. 33 Clemson Tigers. Unfortunately, the Hurricanes’ season came to an end, losing 4-2. Clemson took an early lead, winning two-of-three doubles matches. The Hurricanes fought back, though, with junior Johan Lindqvist taking the No. 3 singles match. Down 3-2, the Hurricanes’ fate was secured when Miami’s Joel Berman fought a grueling match, but sadly lost 6-7, 6-0, 6-4.

Made up of only two seniors, the young and talented 2000 men’s tennis team fought hard to make it to their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament. Individually, Mike Lang, Jose Lieberman, and Lindqvist all accomplished more than 20 singles wins to cap off an unbelievable season. Along with the remarkable coaching skills of Jay Berger and his coaching staff, it was no surprise the Hurricanes were so successful.

Jay Berger was an All- Americanat Clemson University with a 91-22 singles record. After the 1986 season, Berger joined the professional ranks. Highlights of his career include reaching the quarterfinals of both the French Open and U.S. Open, and becoming No. 7 in the world in men’s singles. After knee injuries forced him to retire in 1992, Berger turned to coaching and coached the University of Miami men’s tennis team for five seasons from 1998-2002. During the 2000 season, Berger coached the Hurricanes to a 19-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, earning him the title 2000 BIG EAST Coach of the Year.
