Soccer Edged 1-0 in Exhibition

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its exhibition opener, the University of Miami women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Ohio State, the nation’s 23rd-ranked team at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Despite coming up short on the scoreboard, Miami’s first-year head coach Mary-Frances Monroe was pleased with what she saw on the pitch Friday night, “We were happy to finally get the opportunity to watch the team in a real competitive environment. It gave us a great look at some things we need to work on, but also at some players with special talent that we will continue to utilize.”

The Hurricanes tallied 13 shots, including five from sophomore Jasmine Paterson, easily outpacing the home team.

“The team battled and had some great chances, including several in the final five minutes,” Monroe said.

Aside from allowing a set-piece goal, Miami was solid on defense. Junior Emily Lillard and freshman Catalina Perez each spent a half in goal. Lillard stopped one of two shots she faced, while Perez needed not to make a save.

“Blake [Stockton] and Shannon [McCarthy] were solid in the back and Tara [Schwitter] provided us with a lot of energy in the midfield,” Monroe added.

The Canes will have an off day Saturday before traveling to Dayton to face the Flyers Sunday at 12 p.m.
