Ocampo Qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes sophomore golfer Christina Ocampo has qualified for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The amateur tournament will be held Aug. 5-11 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
“This was my fourth year trying to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship,” Ocampo said. “At the beginning of the summer, I set [qualifying for the am] as my summer goal.”
“I was able to qualify for the USGA Girls Junior for four years in high school and I’ve missed playing in UGGA events, so I really wanted to make it this year.”
Competing at the qualifier at Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach, she shot a 73 during the qualifying round. She forced a playoff with three other golfers for the final qualifying spot. Ocampo eventually claimed the final spot, outlasting the other golfers in a five-hole playoff.
“It felt great accomplishing a goal and I’m setting new goals for Charleston next week,” Ocampo said.
The Delray Beach, Fla., native earned WCGA All-American Scholar and Academic All-ACC honors as a freshman last season. Ocampo was one of three Canes to compete in all 12 tournaments in 2012-13, while appearing in the starting lineup 11 times. She finished third on the team with a 76.81 scoring average in 32 rounds. She posted two top-15 finishes, including an eighth-place showing at the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge.
