Walford Named to John Mackey Award Watch List
NEW YORK – Miami Hurricanes junior TE Clive Walford was named to the 2013 John Mackey Award Watch List announced Tuesday. Walford is one of six ACC tight ends named to the watch list – Eric Ebron (North Carolina), Jake McGee (Virginia), Nick O’Leary (Florida State), Beckett Wales (Syracuse) and Asa Watson (NC State).
Walford enjoyed a career season in 2012, finishing third on the team with 451 receiving yards on 25 catches and tied for the team lead with four receiving scores. He was one of only two Hurricanes to catch at least one pass in all 12 games.
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2013 John Mackey Award recipient will be presented live on Dec. 12, 2013, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show (6 p.m. ET, ESPNU).
The 2013 Mackey Award Midseason Watch List will be announced Oct. 14, while the semifinalists will be unveiled Nov. 18. The 2013 Mackey Award finalists will be revealed Nov. 25.
The John Mackey Award has been presented since 2000. Miami’s Kellen Winslow II won the 2003 John Mackey Award. The award is named for NFL Hall of Famer John Mackey, who is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first president of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
