A Look Back at #MusicMonday

July has arrived and #MusicMonday continues to crank out the songs every Hurricanes fan should listen to as they prepare for another Miami athletic contest.

We kicked off our series with a playlist full of rock and hip hop songs that are sure to get any Miami fan amped for a game. This collection was dubbed “Best Canes Gameday Songs”, but it was only the beginning of what has become the ultimate compilation of Canes music.

#MusicMonday continued with back-to-back weeks of pump-up music. We looked at some of the greatest stadium anthems and hip-hop hype music, compiling songs from artists like Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, The White Stripes, Drake and Eminem.

After three weeks of our song choices, the #MusicMonday series asked the Canes what they liked to listen to before a big game.

Canes center Shane McDermott kicked things off with a collection of songs that help him get ready to play. A member of the 2013 Rimington Trophy watch list, McDermott enjoys listening to songs that inspire him before a game. “Your Hand in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky is one of several tracks that help McDermott get in the right mindset.

“I love listening to this song because it makes you picture in your head winning a big game or making a big play,” McDermott said. “It gives me goosebumps because what I think of the most is winning a championship and how I’d feel after the game.”

While McDermott enjoys country music, quarterback Stephen Morris listens to a pair of hip hop songs that help get him focused before a game. Miami’s 2012 Offensive MVP likes to calm down before a game and songs by Drake and J. Cole help Morris prepare for the task at hand.

“I listen to these songs because before a game I like to be calm,” Morris said. “Some guys like to hear music that gets them hyped, but these two songs are perfect examples of music that helps me focus before a game. I usually would just have these songs on repeat thinking about the game we are about to play.”

The #MusicMonday series will continue to grow and evolve over the summer with more submissions from your favorite Canes, but we also want to get the fans involved.
