Alex Santos Named Head Coach at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – University of Miami assistant women’s tennis coach Alex Santos has been named the next head coach at the University of Pittsburgh, announced Monday by Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson.

“I don’t have enough words to describe how thankful my family and I are to the University of Miami,” said Santos. “To have had the opportunity to be part of this incredible athletic department for four years, learning from one of the best head coaches in the country, and coaching some of the most talented players in college tennis is just unique and so special.”

Santos has spent the past four years with the Miami women’s tennis program and was recently named the 2013 ITA National Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

“Alex has been a wonderful asset to the University of Miami women’s tennis program,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “His hard work and diligence was a perfect match for UM. Part of my responsibility as the leader of this program is to mentor my coaches in a way that someday leads them to reach their ultimate goals professionally. Alex is a friend and co-worker who will be missed and UM is a better place because of him.”

The Oerias, Portugal, native has helped the Hurricanes become one of the most successful programs in the country, having reached the NCAA Division I Women’s Team Championship quarterfinals in each of his three seasons with the program.

“Alex is a tremendous coach, a wonderful person, and was fortunate to be mentored by and learn from one of the best coaches in college tennis in Paige Yaroshuk-Tews,” added Senior Associate AD Jennifer Strawley.

“Without Paige Yaroshuk’s support and guidance it wouldn’t have been possible to be a part of the collegiate athletics world that I’m so passionate about,” Santos said. “The great memories I take with me will last forever, and I will always be cheering for The U.”

Santos will begin his head coaching duties for the Panthers on July 18.
