Four Rowers Named National Scholar-Athletes
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four members of the University of Miami rowing program were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Hannah Hawks, Breanna Hayton, Hannah Meister and Nichole Zayan were among 401 Division I rowers honored by the CRCA as National Scholar-Athletes. Honorees maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and participated in at least 75% of races at the varsity level (1V, 2V, 4V).
“Hannah, Nichole, Breanna, and Hannah each contribute extraordinary things to the racing success of our team, but they do so while achieving at extraordinary levels in their coursework,” Miami head rowing coach Andrew Carter said. “Each of them represent excellence regardless of the forum and this is something their teammates and I are very proud of.”
Hawks and Hayton were both members of the 1V8+ in the 2012-13 season. Hawks, a sophomore, and Hayton, a junior, helped the Canes take the Cal Cup at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. A broadcast journalism major, Hawks has a 3.641 GPA. Hayton has compiled a 3.701 GPA while majoring in aerospace engineering. In addition to being recognized as a National Scholar-Athlete, Hayton was named to the CRCA South All-Region Second Team on Tuesday.
Meister and Zayan both competed with Miami’s 2V8+ this past season. The duo helped the 2V place third in their race at the 2013 ACC Rowing Championships. They also excelled in the classroom as Meister, a visual journalism major, and Zayan, a biomedical engineering major, compiled GPAs of 3.480 and 3.984, respectively.
“Our program has come an incredibly long way in the past four years and each year we seem to be able to celebrate more milestones and accomplishments,” Carter said. “To go along with record-setting performances, we’re having record-setting recognition of our students.”
