Two Divers Qualify for World University Games
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Divers Sam Dorman and Zac Nees punched their tickets to the 2013 World University Games after strong showings at the World Championships Trials hosted by USA Diving.
Dorman captured second in the three-meter event, finishing with 1281.80 points. Though he was not selected to the 2013 USA Diving team for the World Championships in Barcelona due to qualifying point thresholds, he added two more events to his schedule for the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. The Tempe, Ariz., native will now be competing in both the one-meter and three-meter, as well as the synchronized three-meter with a fellow Hurricane.
Nees, who sat out the 2012-13 season with Miami after transferring as a senior from Indiana University, finished sixth in Monday’s 3-meter event with a final score of 1178.85. Despite not qualifying for the individual event, Nees will be competing in the synchro 3-meter along with Dorman in Kazan.
Rising junior Kara McCormack, who earned 2013 ACC Women’s Diver of the Year honors, finished seventh in the platform event. Head diving coach Randy Ableman, who was recognized with ACC Coach of the Year honors this past season, was invited to become head coach at the upcoming World University Games.
