Larkin Declares for 2013 NBA Draft
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Shane Larkin will forego his remaining collegiate eligibility and enter the 2013 NBA Draft.
The standout point guard announced his decision Sunday at a press conference in the BankUnited Center, home to Miami’s basketball programs.
The Orlando, Fla., native played a key role in Miami’s historic season, helping the Canes win the ACC regular season title and ACC tournament, both firsts for the program. Miami earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and made a run to the Sweet 16. Larkin led the Canes in scoring (14.5 ppg), points (522), assists (164), steals (71) and 3-point percentage (40.6%).
Larkin’s success on the court helped Miami rise in the rankings, reaching as high as No. 2 both the Associated Press and USA TODAY polls. It also raised his profile as one of the top talents in the entire country.
The lightning quick guard earned a lengthy list of accolades, including being selected as the Lute Olson National Player of the Year. He was also a Bob Cousy Award finalist (top 5), Wooden Award finalist (top 15) and Naismith Player of the Year candidate (top 30).
He was listed as a Second Team All-America (AP, NABC, ESPN), John Wooden All-America, Third Team All-America (Sporting News), Lute Olson All-America, Lefty Driesell Defensive All-American and named to the USBWA All-District IV Team.
Larkin was ACC Player of the Year (Coaches, Sports Illustrated, ESPN), All-ACC First Team (ASCMA, Coaches, ESPN) and All-ACC Defensive Team (ASCMA, Coaches). He was named ACC Tournament MVP and ACC All-Tournament First Team after leading the Canes to the championship while averaging 23.7 ppg over the three-game stretch.
Beyond the aforementioned success, the Hurricanes accomplished several impressive feats in the 2012-13 season and Larkin was a major factor in those achievements coming to fruition.
On Jan. 23, Miami beat No. 1 Duke, 90-63, to pick up their first win over a top-ranked program in school history. Larkin scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while dishing out five assists and picking up a steal against the Blue Devils.
Larkin, who scored in double figures in 30 of his 36 games played this season, repeatedly stepped up against top opponents. The 5-foot-11 guard had impressive showings in Miami wins over No. 13 Michigan St., No. 19 NC State and North Carolina.
The sophomore had his best performance of the season in one of Miami’s biggest games, scoring a career-high 28 points in the ACC tournament championship game. Facing UNC for the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, Larkin played all 40 minutes, dishing out seven assists, grabbing five rebounds and picking up two steals in a 87-77 Hurricanes’ win.
