CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 53 University of Miami men’s tennis team began its tough weekend schedule of road matches in North Carolina with a 5-2 loss to the No. 69 University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
“It took our guys too long to get in a rhythm and start getting in long rallies,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “We made too many mistakes in singles and got down early on a few courts.”
The Tar Heels got off to a strong start, winning 8-1 on court one doubles behind strong performances by Nelson Vick and William Parker. Miami’s Diego Soto and Gabriel Flores played well on court 2, but ultimately dropped their match to Esben Hess-Olesen and Brett Clark of North Carolina, 8-6.
North Carolina’s momentum continued in singles play with Oystein Steiro beating Miami’s Marco Stancati, 6-1, 6-4, on court 5. Vick followed that up for the Tar Heels with a 6-0, 6-3 court three victory over the Hurricane’s Wilfredo Gonzalez.
Parker then clinched the match for North Carolina behind his 6-3, 6-3 win over Miami’s Omar Aly at No. 4 singles.
Victor Mauz successfully secured Miami’s first point of the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win over North Carolina’s Andrew Gores. Diego Soto fought hard on court one for Miami, but ultimately lost in three sets to Hess-Olesen, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6.
Gabriel Flores overcame a tough 0-6 defeat in the first set to go on and win the final two frames 6-3, 6-4 and gave Miami its second point of the afternoon.
“Gabriel had a good win,” Rincon said. “He played solid tennis after he lost the first set. Victor did a great job of closing the match in two sets.”
“Duke will be a great challenge for us, and we need to play our best against them.” Rincon added.
The Hurricanes next match will be on Sunday against No. 9 Duke at noon in Durham, N.C. Duke is the 9th ranked team in the NCAA and the highest ranked ACC team with the exception of No. 1 University of Virginia.
