Coach L & Larkin Earn Basketball Times Honors

University of Miami men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga and Shane Larkin have been selected to the Basketball Times’ All-District team for the South region.

Larrañaga is the South region Coach of the Year while Larkin was the only ACC player listed on the all-district team.

In his second year at Miami, Larrañaga led his team to an overall record of 27-6, the most wins in program history. The Hurricanes, who won both the ACC regular season title and the ACC Tournament, enter the NCAA Championship as a No. 2 seed in the East Region. Miami was ranked as high as No. 2 nationally, defeated No. 1 Duke and hosted five capacity crowds at the BankUnited Center this season – all firsts for the program. Beyond the victory over Duke, Larrañaga’s Canes picked up a marquee victory over No. 13 Michigan State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and defeated North Carolina three times. He guided his Hurricanes to a 15-3 ACC record in the 2012-13 season, earning Miami the top seed in the ACC tournament.

Larkin, the Orlando, Fla., native, was selected as the Lute Olson National Player of the Year. He was also a Bob Cousy Award finalist (top 5), Wooden Award finalist (top 15) and Naismith Player of the Year candidate (top 30). He was listed as a Second Team All-America (AP, NABC, ESPN), John Wooden All-America, Third Team All-America (Sporting News), Lute Olson All-America, Lefty Driesell Defensive All-American and named to the USBWA All-District IV Team. Larkin was ACC Player of the Year (Coaches, Sports Illustrated, ESPN), All-ACC First Team (ASCMA, Coaches, ESPN) and All-ACC Defensive Team (ASCMA, Coaches). He was named ACC Tournament MVP and ACC All-Tournament First Team after leading the Canes to the championship while averaging 23.7 ppg over the three-game stretch. Larkin led the Canes in scoring (14.5 ppg), points (522), assists (164), steals (71) and 3-point percentage (40.6%).
