Rowing Wins Cal Cup at San Diego Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO — The University of Miami rowing program traveled to the west coast and brought a trophy back to Coral Gables.
Miami’s Varsity 8+ exceled from the minute they took the water in Mission Bay. The Canes posted a time of 6:43.20 to win the Cal Cup at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic.
The Canes 1V8+, who won their heat on Saturday with a time of 6:36.77, entered Sunday’s Cal Cup Grand Final as the top seed. But it was the University of San Diego who opened the race in front.
The Toreros, who were racing on their home course, led by as much as a full boat length during the first 1000m.
But the Canes surprised the Toreros at the 1000m mark with a move that ended with Miami taking over the lead with close to 500m to go.
Miami’s late charge led to a Hurricane win by a boat length over San Diego, with the University of British Columbia following in third position. The Hurricanes claimed the Cal Cup for the first time under head coach Andrew Carter.
