No. 52 MTennis Blanks Boston College, 7-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Protecting home court has been something the University of Miami men’s tennis team has done all season and today was no exception, as the 52nd-ranked Hurricanes dominated Boston College for a 7-0 sweep Sunday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The win improves Miami’s impressive home record to 10-2 on the season.

“Winning at home is always great,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “Especially to win in front of our tennis friends here. It is definitely an advantage; our players know how to play in this weather and in the wind. A lot of teams have a difficult time adjusting to the conditions here. So it is great to play at Miami.”
Miami (13-8, 2-4 ACC) controlled the match from start to finish, battling to the early doubles point then dominating all six singles matches in straight sets.
“Our guys had a really good match today in both singles and doubles,” Rincon said. “We had a very good week of practice and it is rewarding for us to be able to get out on top with the doubles point and roll from there.”
“It is a great confidence builder. In the last stretch of the season it is really nice to win a match like today. Boston College has some solid tennis players but we were able to put them away early.” Rincon added
In his first collegiate tennis match, freshman Jack Murphy teamed with junior Marco Stancati and battled to an 8-5 victory over Boston College’s Alexandre Thirouin and Kyle Childree on court three, helping Miami to an early advantage in doubles. Miami clinched the doubles point on court one, as the Hurricanes’ 66th-ranked tandem Wilfredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly battled to an 8-6 victory over Philip Nelson and Michael McGinnis.
Singes play began with a strong statement from freshman standout William Albanese. The 6-0 right-hander powered through his match against Klaus Puestow for a lopsided 6-0, 6-1 victory on court six. The win gives Albanese his 13th singles win of the season, making him second on the team.
It was business as usual for Wilfredo Gonzalez, as the Guatemala City, Guatemala native gave Miami a 3-0 lead after his quick 6-2, 6-3 victory over Billy Grokenberger at the third position. Gonzalez has been solid all season and leads Miami with 14 dual singles wins on the season.
Diego Soto shut the door on Boston College with his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Philip Nelson at No. 1 singles.
Despite clinching the victory already, the Hurricanes stayed aggressive and closed the match with three more straight set wins.
Finishing fourth for Miami was Marco Stancati, besting Kyle Childree 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles, giving Miami a commanding 5-0 lead.
Senior Victor Mauz gave Miami its sixth point behind his 6-2, 6-4 win over Matt Wagner at No. 5 singles.
Rounding out Miami’s scoring for the afternoon was Gabriel Flores, as he rolled past Michael McGinnis, 6-2, 6-2, keeping Miami perfect on the day.
The Hurricanes will finish out the season against some stiff ACC competition but coach Rincon is confident his players will carry over the momentum it built today and step up to the challange.
“We have four big matches left on our schedule,” Rincon explained. “Against UNC, Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech. They are all very good teams. But we are going to play our best and peak at the right time. We have great opportunities ahead of us and hopefully we can capitalize on them.”
Miami will next travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a match against conference foe North Carolina at 3 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
