No. 52 MTen Returns Home for Match on Sunday
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 52nd-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will finally get to play on its home court again after a three match ACC road swing the past two weekends. On Sunday, April 7 Miami will welcome ACC foe Boston College to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, where the Hurricanes hold an impressive 9-2 record on the season.
Miami (12-7, 1-4 ACC) is coming off a tough road loss to then-No. 38 North Carolina State last Sunday. The Hurricanes presented stiff challenges in both singles and doubles competition but fell to the Wolfpack, 5-2.
Miami got production in singles play from the third and fourth positions, as Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati both tallied straight set wins.
Gonzalez, playing at No. 3 singles, grabbed his team-leading 14th dual singles victory after beating Dave Thomson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 4 singles, Stancati gave Miami its final point of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 rout of NC State’s Thomas Weigel.
After Miami took a 2-1 lead, NC State survived tough challenges from the Hurricanes and responded with four straight singles wins to close out the match.
Despite the tough loss, head coach Mario Rincon is confident his players will respond with strong performances to finish out the regular season.
“We have five matches left on our schedule,” Rincon said. “Our guys know we need to have a strong finish to our season. Our guys are improving and fighting hard, and we should be able to make a strong push in the last part of our season.”
Boston College enters Sunday with a 5-9 overall record on the dual season. Boston College is yet to record a conference win and is coming off a tough 7-0 sweep against top-ranked Virginia.
Kyle Childree has been the Eagle’s most successful singles player, posting a 7-6 record on season, including a perfect 5-0 record while at the fifth position. Michael McGinnis and Philip Nelson have been Boston College’s primary No. 1 doubles team and have marked a 4-5 record so far this season.
In last year’s matchup between Miami and Boston College the Eagles grabbed a tough 5-2 victory over the Canes. Scoring for Miami were Wilfredo Gonzalez and Diego Soto with identical 6-1, 6-4 scores from the third and fourth singles positions, respectively.
