All-American Monday - Johan Donar

Johan Donar (1987-90)

Coral Gables, Fla. – Achievinga 1984 top-15 ranking in his home country of Sweden, Johan Donar would treatthe Hurricane fans to four amazing years as he earned All-American status ineach season. In his first year of competition, Donar won nine of 10 matches onhis way to an overall record of 25-14 in singles competition. At the end of theseason, Donar was the No. 14 nationally ranked player.

Donar followed his impressive freshman season with anequally impressive sophomore season. Playing entirely out of the No. 1 positionfor the Hurricanes, Donar won nine consecutive matches and 18 of his last 24 tocompile an overall singles record of 25-10. Teaming with Ollie Jonsson, Donarcompiled an overall doubles record of 13-9. Donar not only displayed success onthe court but he displayed success off it as well. For his accomplishments inthe class room, Donar earned Dean’s List recognition in the spring of 1988.

As a junior, Donar compiled a nine game win streak and won15 of his last 19 on his way to an overall singles record of 27-14. In the 1989NCAA tournament, Donar reached the quarterfinals. In doubles competition, Donarteamed with fellow All-American Conny Falk to form one of the nation’s best No.1 singles combinations. Donar compiled an overall record of 18-5, while winning14 of the first 15 matches. In the final national collegiate tennis rankings ofthe year, Donar was selected No. 9 in singles and selected No. 4 with partnerConny Falk.

Donar closed out his Hurricane career with his mostimpressive since he stepped foot on the Coral Gables campus. Winning six of hislast seven matches, Donar compiled an overall singles season record of 33-10.Included in his victories was an appearance in the semifinals of the RolexRegion 3 Indoor Championships. In doubles, while partnered with Falk, Donarcompiled an overall record of 18-5. Donar finished the season and his Hurricanecareer as the No. 17 nationally ranked player in singles and as one-half of thenational No. 12 team.

Two years after his four All-American years at theUniversity of Miami, Donar teamed with fellow Hurricane Jonsson to win his onlycareer ATP Tour title.
