S&D Finishes No. 20 at NCAA Championship
INDIANAPOLIS — Paced by Kara McCormack’s sixth-place finish in the platform finals, the Miami Hurricanes ended their run at the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championship in 20th place nationwide.
After punching her ticket to NCAA’s with a top finish in the platform at Zone B qualifying, McCormack scored 284.95 in preliminaries to earn a spot in Saturday’s finals. The Austin, Texas native earned All-America honors for the second straight season by totaling 286.20 in the final round of competition.
Fellow diver Lindsay Lester, who earned All-America recognition Friday by taking eighth-place in the 3-meter event, reached the consolation final of the platform. She ended the night in 14th place with a final-round score of 277.20.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Lucy Worrall continued her strong run at NCAA’s by breaking her school record in the 200-Yard Butterfly. The Vicars Cross, England, native, who earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition in the 100 Fly earlier in the championship, finished Saturdays morning preliminaries in a personal-best time of 1:57.32.
With 40 points through three days of competition, the Hurricanes placed third among all Atlantic Coast Conference schools at No. 20, behind North Carolina (102, No. 12) and Virginia (45, No. 18). 2013 marked the third consecutive year that at least three ACC schools finished in the top 20 by tournament’s end.
ACC teams combined for 19 individual All-America performances in swimming and nine in diving at the championship, including four Hurricanes: senior diver Carrie Dragland (Honorable Mention, 1-meter), Lester, McCormack and Worrall.
