Football Wraps First Spring Scrimmage

MIAMI – The University of Miami Hurricanes football team completed its first spring scrimmage Saturday in front of more than 2,000 fans at Traz Powell Stadium.

Saturday’s 90-minute scrimmage simulated different game situations, including goal-line and red-zone scenarios.

“It’s a good start today, we learned a lot about our guys,” head coach Al Golden said. “There are really only 5-6 guys that weren’t with us in the fall. They showed up (to play) today.

“Those guys had a great opportunity in front of them,” Golden said. “We had more penalties than (we) want and the tempo not as crisp as (we) want. Herb Waters and Dallas Crawford played well as did Alex Figueroa on defense.”

Miami’s five quarterbacks – senior Stephen Morris, junior Ryan Williams, redshirt freshmen Gray Crow and Preston Dewey and freshman Garrison Lassiter – completed passes to 12 different Hurricanes receivers.

The offense’s lone touchdown came on a Morris pass to Herb Waters, while the defense racked up two interceptions on Morris.

Sophomore Matt Goudis was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, including a 49-yarder.

The Canes return to the GreenTree Practice Fields on Tuesday for their eighth practice session of the spring, followed by practice on Thursday. Miami will take its next scrimmage on the road, as the Canes will host a scrimmage Friday, April 5 (7 p.m.) at Naples High School in Naples.
