Lester, Worrall Among Day's Top Participants
INDIANAPOLIS — Junior diver Lindsay Lester and sophomore swimmer Lucy Worrall were among the top participants on day two at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championship.
Lester captured eighth place in the 3-meter diving event, earning the first outright All-America honors for the Hurricanes at the tournament. Competing in her first NCAA postseason, the San Jose, Calif., native finished with a final-round score of 320.45, as she became the fifth diver from the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn All-America honors.
Lester qualifed for the finals with a dominant first-round score of 340.85, ranking her seventh among all participants entering the final round.
Lester’s teammates, Carrie Dragland and Kara McCormack, earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition on Thursday in Indianapolis. The two divers finished 12th and 13th respectively in the 1-meter finals.
All three divers will be competing in Saturday’s platform event. McCormack, who earned a trip to the postseason with a first-place showing in platform at Zone B regional qualifying, will be looking for her second straight season of All-America recognition.
Worrall qualified for the finals in her signature event, the 100-Yard Butterfly, by swimming preliminaries in a time of 52.40. She would cut her time to 52.37 in the finals, finishing fifth in the consolation final to take Honorable Mention All-America recognition.
“I’m so proud of Lucy and so excited for the future,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “She is just at the tip of the iceberg for her career, and we’re all very excited about big things to come!”
Boosted by some impressive finishes on the first two days, the Hurricanes are one of four ACC teams ranked in the top 25 at the tournament. With one day of competition left, Miami is currently No. 22 among all teams competing with 24 points.
