Rowing Starts Well at Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing program had a solid start on the opening day of the Cardinal Invitational. Miami competed in races in the 1V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and N8+ events.

The first round of racing pitted the Canes against the University of Buffalo and Eastern Michigan University. The 1V was not seriously pressed, despite a good start from Buffalo, and cruised to a 20-second win.  The 2V stumbled in the closing stages and allowed a 3/4 boat-length lead to get eaten up by Buffalo in the last 300m and the Bulls managed to get their nose in front at the line for a 0.4 second win.  The V4+ rowed very well, with two freshman novice rowers making up half the crew.  They led from start to finish and crossed the line with an open-water, 4-second victory.

In the afternoon round of racing, Miami faced off with West Virginia University and the University of Dayton.  The Canes swept the three varsity races in good form and went nip-and-tuck for second in the N8+, but came up short at the finish.

“I’m quite pleased with how things went on the first day of our spring season,” said Miami’s rowing coach, Andrew Carter. “I think we got some good pieces under our belt and really learned a lot. This early in the season, there is a lot of experimenting going on and I think the crews really had some good take-away from today’s efforts.”

The Miami crews will face extremely stiff competition from Notre Dame and Louisville on Sunday morning.
