Luis Garcia (1969-71)
Coral Gables, Fla. – The Merida, Yucatan native cameto the University of Miami as a member of the Mexico’s Davis Cup team. LuisGarcia began his Hurricane with a bang. After posting a perfect 18-0 mark insingles play and a 12-1 mark in doubles competition, Garcia advanced to thequarterfinals of the 1969 NCAA tournament in both singles and doubles. Hissuccess in the tournament brought his overall singles and doubles record to23-1 and 16-2, respectively. For this he was selected to the 1969 All-Americanteam.
Continuingfrom where he left of during his freshman season, Garcia for the secondstraight season won 18-plus singles matches (18-1). In doubles competition,Garcia posted a 13-1 mark. Partnering with All-American teammate Pat Cramer,together they were crowned the 1970 NCAA Tournament doubles champion. For thishis sportsmanship at the tournament, Garcia was awarded the Raphael Osunatrophy, college tennis’s most coveted prize. His success in the tournamentraised his overall singles record to 21-1 and his doubles record to 19-1.
Despitenot having the opportunity to post 18-plus wins for three consecutive seasons,Garcia, as captain of the 1971 Hurricanes, did not disappoint. After posting aregular singles season mark of 15-1 and a doubles mark of 13-1, Garcia for thethird consecutive year advanced to at least the fourth round of the NCAAtournament. His success raised his overall record to 18-2 in singles and 16-2in doubles. For the third consecutive year, Garcia had been selected to theAll-American team.
Aspart of Mexico’s Davis Cup team, Garcia defeated 1969 NCAA Champion JoaquinLayo-Mayo of USC, the same individual who had defeated teammate Pat Cramer forthe opportunity to advance and play in the final. In 1968 and 1970, Garcia wonMexico’s doubles championship. As a Cane, Garcia posted an overall combinedrecord of 103-11 (62-5 in singles and 51-6 in doubles). Due to his success,Garcia was elected into University of Miami’s Sports of Hall in 1986.
