UM Rowing Hits the Water in Spring Opener

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team opened their spring season with an exhibition scrimmage against the University of Michigan.  The teams raced four 1,000m pieces in three separate flights.  For the Varsity 8+’s the first three races were capped at 28, 30, and 32 strokes-per-minute, respectively, while the Varsity 4+’s and Novice 8+’s were assigned two beats lower. The final races of the session were opened up for crews to race freely.

Miami’s first and second Varsity 8+’s raced well against the tough competition from the Big Ten.  As the races progressed, Miami’s 1V edged ever closer to their Michigan counterparts, finishing the final race a mere 1.6 seconds off.  The Canes’ young 2V raced very well and finished the day strongly, cutting early double-digit deficits to Michigan’s 2V to only 6.2 seconds on the final race.

With this being the first sprint-racing of half the crew’s career, the Varsity 4+ raced with a consistency beyond their experience.  The Novice 8+ also finished strong, posting their fastest time of the day in their final race.

“This annual scrimmage with Michigan is an excellent way to launch our spring campaign” said Canes head coach, Andrew Carter.  “As the reigning NCAA silver medalists, Michigan is sure to provide us with a sense of where we are.  What we learned is that we’re another solid step forward as a team.  Results versus a year ago are much improved, not only relative to excellent Michigan crews but relative to the clock.  I think the women were excited to start racing and were excited to see the pay-off for their quality investment so far this year.”

The Canes will race in Oak Ridge, Tennessee next weekend at the Cardinal Invitational.
