Baseball Breaks Into USA Today Coaches' Poll

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a perfect week improvedtheir season mark to 7-0, the Miami Hurricanes entered the USA Today Coaches’Poll for the first time in 2013, breaking into Monday’s rankings at No. 21.

The Hurricanes also jumped up two spots in the weekly NCBWA poll released Monday, moving from No. 23 to No. 21. Miami remained at No. 20 in the weekly CollegiateBaseball Newspaper poll.

The Hurricanes, one of four undefeated teams in the AtlanticCoast Conference, used a comeback to topple FAU in their road opener on Feb.20. A late two-run homerun from freshman David Thompson helped force extrainnings, while an RBI single from junior Brad Fieger in the top of the 11thwould clinch a 5-4 victory.

Miami then swept visiting Milwaukee in a weekend series atAlex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes’ rotation allowed only threeearned runs over 15.2 combined innings in the sweep, while Thompson sparked theCanes offense once again. The Miami, Fla., native, ranked among theconference’s top power hitters statistically, finished the weekend with fivedoubles and six RBI’s.

The Hurricanes have a pair of home games before they travelto Gainesville, Fla., and a weekend series with in-state rival Florida. Miamiwill face St. Thomas on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and Barry on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Firstpitch for both midweek games is set for 6 p.m.
